When travelling there’s a possibility of being seated next to someone sneezing, coughing or experiencing some other ailment that might result in the spread of germs. Here’s a few tips to help you avoid being sick.
1. Know “immune boosting” remedies aren’t guaranteed.
People spend lots of money of pills, drinks and other stuff claiming to boost your immune system. There’s not a ton of research that backs up their effectiveness. Studies show your immune system doesn’t zoom up or down in response to short-term interventions.
2. Load up on vitamins?
Maybe you’ve heard that increasing your intake of vitamin C and zinc is key, but the research on this has been mixed as well. It you take a daily dose of something like vitamin C then stick with this and don’t over compensate trying to boost your immune system.
3. Don’t stress about immune-boosting superfoods.
There’s not really a magic ingredient that will stave off colds. What will help is a balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits. Enjoying a healthy diet with nutritious foods on a consistent basis is helpful. Not over indulging in over-the-counter vitamins and supplements
4. Check with your doctor about shots.
It’s a good idea to check with your doctor about appropriate shots you’ll need for your travel destination. Shots may not be required but it’s good to find out for sure as to the best option.
5. Always wash your hands.
It’s a good idea to wash hand for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. You don’t need to get fancy– just regular bar or liquid soap is best. However, if you can’t get to a sink, hand sanitizers work, too.
6. Always lather up before you eat.
This is important. Take the time to lather up after you use the bathroom and basically any time you touch something questionable. And scrub all over for a good 20 seconds before rinsing off.
7. Avoid touching the door handle.
Especially right after you washed your hands. In fact, try to avoid touching high-traffic germy areas just after you disinfect.
8. Disinfect the areas around you while on flights.
This includes tray tables, seat buckles, arm rests and more. Simply use an antibacterial wipe for this.
Most germs are spread through the air or through touching, so the farther you stay away from infected people, the better. The good news is that the air filters on planes can actually filter out some of those germs, so you don’t have to be too concerned about the person coughing and sneezing 10 rows behind you.
