If travelling during the December holiday season is part of your plans, you may think it’s too late to score a deal. Of course it’s great to plan ahead but it’s too late to find great deals on last-minute holiday travel.
1. Sign Up for Fare Alerts
By signing up for travel fare alerts you’ll receive the deals whenever they become available. This is a great way to stay aware of great fares, particularly when prices drop.
2. Travel on Christmas Day
This is a fantastic way to save if you have the option of travelling on the specific date of a holiday. Plus you’ll likely enjoy the journey better because it is less crowded.
3. Fly Out of an Alternate Airport
Flights out of major hubs will almost always command higher prices than those out of regional airports. See if you can save by driving to the smaller airport which might be an hour or so away.
4. Cash in Frequent-Flier Miles
Hopefully you have a credit card or belong to a loyalty program that lets you rack up rewards to be used on travel. When it comes time to buy your airfare, put those frequent-flier miles to use.
Another option may be to use the miles to upgrade your travel accommodations from economy to first class. Treat yourself and travel in style.
5. Check with a Travel Agent
With so many options available for you to check online for deals a travel agent might seem like a waste of money and time. However, an experienced agent may be able to steer you around any potential travel money pits
6. Consider Trains and buses
Trains may not be an option for saving money. Sometimes you’ll find amazing deals with this transportation option.
7. Ask for a Discount at the Hotel
Many people never contact hotels direct these days. It’s a great to check as you never know what you will find. Call the hotel front desk directly (not the toll-free number) and ask for the cheapest non-refundable room they have available. Even upon arrival ask if there are any discounted available that day.
Also, check for complimentary upgrades for holiday travellers. Again, you just might get a nice special of an even lovelier room option. Remember, it never hurts to ask, just refrain from being demanding.
8. Rent a Car Away From the Airport
Rental car services at the airport often charge a premium. Check other off-site providers in advance of your trip to check for better pricing. Some companies will be happy to deliver the car to the airport for you. Then you get the convenience of an airport rental without the cost.
Following the steps will have you save some dollars for the holidays. We also recommend a few travel essentials like a travel pillow and travel sewing kit for rest and quick fixes.
