What is the appropriate amount to tip? We all have wondered this when travelling, especially visiting other countries. Knowing how to tip when travelling is not quite as simple as you might think. While it is somewhat consistent throughout the United States, it is not always so when travelling in other countries.
Luckily, when you go on a cruise, all the guesswork is taken out of it. One of the nicer things about cruising is that you aren’t handing out tips left and right throughout your trip. The night before your cruise ends, you will find envelopes in your cabin along with “suggested” tipping. You can follow their format, or decrease the amount because of poor service if you choose, or add as much as you like when the service has gone above and beyond the norm. Personally, this will vary based on your expectations.
With regards to transportation, a shuttle or van driver should get $2 per person. On the other hand, valets would normally get $1 -$2.
As for the bellman who takes your bags to your room, they typically get $1-$2 per bag, and if you use the concierge to get your tickets and reservations, they may receive $5-$10 … depending on how difficult they are to procure. Now, room service is the same as any restaurant … 15 % of the bill; however, be sure to check if gratuity wasn’t already added on to the cost. You may find this is the case at times. The usual tip for a maid is $2 per day when you leave. Most tour guides get $1 per person for short tours and $2 for a full day.
Now, having reviewed all the above services you should be in good shape for showing your appreciation when travelling. You might find it to take a few notes to keep these in mind during your trip. The idea is to simply be prepared ahead of time so you can enjoy your vacation with ease. Happy travelling.
